The Dead Horse Theory: A Simple Lesson for Leaders

There’s an old saying: “If you realize you’re riding a dead horse, the best thing to do is get off.”

But in many organizations, instead of getting off the horse, people often:

  • Use a stronger whip to try to make the horse move.
  • Form a team to study the horse.
  • Send employees to training on how to ride dead horses.
  • Rename the horse to make it sound better, like calling it “energy-challenged.”

Promote the dead horse to a higher position, hoping it inspires others.

The Lesson:
When something isn’t working anymore, whether it’s a plan, project, or strategy you need to stop wasting time and energy on it. Let it go and focus on something that works.

What Leaders Can Do:

1. Check what’s working and what’s not. Be honest about it.

2. Make decisions quickly. If it’s not working, don’t be afraid to move on.

3. Be open to new ideas. Create a culture where people feel safe trying new things.

Sometimes, success isn’t about working harder…it’s about knowing when to let go of strategy, process or any old way of doing business.
